At the back of the city is a settlement where whoever believes himself to be king of Onyx lives. Its residents tend to change in and out fairly often, and although it has high walls surrounding it, people always manage to sneak in a perform a coup on whoever thinks they're king of Onyx so they can nab the title instead. because of this, it is one of the least safe places in the city.

The majority of the city is filled with a marketplace, where less-than-reputable merchants come to fence their wares. Independent sellers can either set up a stall or force another merchant out of theirs. In the alleys of the marketplace, small-time crooks might entice unaware passersby to dice games and amateur entertainers perform for tips.

Between the market and the alcazar lies a huge domed crater where the original builders had originally planned to place a shelter in case of magical fallout, appropriately named "the Pit". It serves as a tavern, a casino, and occasionally hosts things like mouse races and brawls (often to the death).

There are very few laws in Onyx. As such, there is no courthouse, but there is a sheriff who will gladly drag off anyone who might be a snitch or might be posing a threat to the "local economy". Seldom do the people who make it into jail make it out just the same.

On occasion, when someone ends up on a winning streak they might toss a few coins on the altar to show their appreciation for Fortuna. More frequently, however those down on their luck will come to either pray or spit at the altar.

Onyx's tenements house its few residents, and serve as an inn and a brothel for the many travelers that pass through. The tenements are piled alongside the marketplace and are tended to by several landlords. More civilized visitors of Onyx are usually hesitant to sleep on the beds, as it's often unclear just how well-maintained the rooms are between visitors.
